Kendall Lee knocked in the winning run with an extra-innings single on Tuesday, giving the Fruitport softball team an exciting 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Grand Rapids West Catholic.

The Trojans trailed through much of the game, including the bottom of the seventh inning, when Fruitport’s Brylee Dewitt doubled in two runs to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.

Lee’s game-winning single came one inning later.

Fruitport had 10 hits in the victory. Lee, Dewitt, Olive Staal and Teagan Schultz led the way with two hits apiece.

Brooklyn Russell pitched the victory, scattering 12 hits over eight innings on the mound.

The Trojans did not fare so well in the second game of the O-K Blue conference doubleheader, losing 12-2.

Maddy Kohnke led Fruitport with two hits in the nightcap.

“I was very pleased with how we played the first game,” said Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman. “It seemed liked every time we looked at the scoreboard, we were down a run throughout the whole game, and we were down going into the seventh. It was good to see that the girls never quit. They shake it off and continue to battle.”
