The Fruitport volleyball team has been cruising through its conference schedule in recent weeks, beating all challengers, but some adversity finally arrived on Thursday.

The Trojans lost two leads and fell to a very determined Calvin Christian squad in five tough sets in an O-K Silver conference showdown.

Fruitport and Calvin Christian are now tied for first place in the conference standings with identical 6-1 records. The champion will be determined at the conference tournament a week from Saturday.

The Trojans seemed to be in good shape early in the match, cruising to a 25-15 victory in the first set.

Sadie Haase, 23 kills

The Squires rebounded with a 25-21 win in the second set, then Fruitport pulled ahead again with a very decisive 25-8 win in the third.

Calvin Christian continued to fight, however, and squeaked out a 25-23 victory in the fourth set, forcing a fifth-set tiebreaker.

The Squires won that 15-10 and stole the match away from the Trojans.

“The girls worked hard, but we were a little out of sync tonight,” said Fruitport Coach Nicole Bayle, whose team is now 23-10 overall on the season. “Calvin Christian is just a really scrappy team and outworked us on the defensive part of the game.

Izzy Hanson-Wilbur, 24 digs

“We are taking this loss as a motivator, as we get closer to the end of the season, to step up and clean up some of the things that we still need to improve on.”

Sadie Haase and Ellie Stroup had 23 and 10 kills, respectively, for Fruitport. Gracelynn Olson logged 44 assists. Defensively, Izzy Hanson-Wilbur had 24 digs and Emma Fecher added 19.

The Trojans will next compete in Saturday’s Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Tournament at Reeths-Puffer High School.ministorageth brands
